mymizu is a venture of Social Innovation Japan (a registered nonprofit organization), launched in September 2019, that engages consumers and companies to reduce plastic waste and usage and to engage in sustainable practices and values. We provide a free platform that provides information about nearby locations where you can refill a water bottle, at public locations and businesses that sign up as our partners.

We are now growing rapidly and improving our existing water refill platform and building new engagement tools, such as a mymizu challenge that can be undertaken by companies and the general public too! We are looking for:

  • Freelancers

  • Pro bono volunteers (* if you have limited time available)

who can help us to build the Pokemon Go of sustainability!

Depending on your background and preferences you could focus on either our app or web platforms, but ideally, you will be able to help out with either area and have some familiarity with both app and web development.

Job Description

(flexible based on your experience):

  • You will help develop new features for our refill system and engagement systems

  • You will develop API and management systems using PHP/Laravel

  • You will develop a future web front-end, most likely in a reactive Javascript framework

  • You will develop our mobile application using React Native

  • You will operate deployments using DigitalOcean virtual machines and app platform

  • You will design and help improve system architecture

Programming Languages:

  • Web development in PHP or similar rapid development languages (especially MVC frameworks like Laravel)

  • Web development in Javascript

  • App development in ReactJS

  • Database operation using PostGreSQL or similar (MySQL)

Other Required Skills/Experience:

  • Business-level English language ability or above

Desirable Experience:

  • Basic Japanese is desirable (fluent / native even more so!)

  • Prior experience such as:

    • Developing features relating to geographic locations and searching

    • Development involving ‘gamification’

    • Development focused on solving social/environmental problems

Process

  • Startup environment

  • Scrum/Agile methodologies

  • Working, communicating, and documenting in English

Role and work environment 

  • Time commitment: ideally 5-20 hours a week, but this is negotiable.

  • Starting in April/May (negotiable)

  • Remote work = no problem! Our work style is currently fully remote. Please be prepared to use your own laptop.
