changemakers have already joined us as mymizu Monthly Supporters!
🥳 This September, mymizu turned 3 years old! 🥳
Having started as a humble experiment in 2019, our growth and impact have exceeded anything we ever imagined. And it’s ALL thanks to the time, energy and generosity of countless people who believe in our mission.
As we enter our 4th year, we’re more committed than ever to the fight against plastic waste and the climate crisis.
But we need your help.
We’re launching the mymizu Monthly Supporters campaign for like-minded allies who want to contribute directly to our cause.
Your support is essential to keep the mymizu platform free for everyone, everywhere, and will enable us to scale up our work for a more sustainable world.
👇 Watch the video message from Robin below to find out why 👇
🚀 Since launching in 2019, we’ve:
Built a platform for plastic-free water that serves 200,000+ people across 50 countries, saving millions of PET bottles along the way
Grown a network of 2,000+ partner businesses that help us stay happy and hydrated without the plastic
Empowered 50,000+ young people through education programs, activities and leadership training
Built partnerships with some of the most influential corporations, city governments, schools, universities and nonprofits, to bring people together and take action.
Welcomed famous actors, sports stars, mayors and students to join our movement, and hosted “mymizu Challenges” with cities, schools and universities across Japan
Reached No.1 in the App Store, and been featured on the likes of BBC, CNN and NHK
Won several major awards, including the prestigious “Minister of Environment Prize” - twice!
And - zooming out a bit - recent data suggests that the number of people wanting refill options in stores has grown from 65% to a stunning 91% in just one year (*1)
And the movement continues to grow every day, thanks to people like you! 🔥
In fact, we have more demand now than ever before to keep doing what we do.
The growth of the mymizu movement is incredibly exciting…
But it also brings mounting costs.
Honestly, it’s gotten to the point where we’re no longer able to cover everything ourselves. We’ve been committed to keeping mymizu free-of-charge (for both users and Refill Partners) since day one, so we can reach as many people as possible and really have a go at tackling the plastic problem - and we will keep that promise.
Our team has hustled hard to find creative ways to fund the growing mymizu platform - from working with major companies to opening an online store, to government contracts and philanthropic grants. But, it’s been a challenge to secure a stable base of funding.
That’s why we are launching our mymizu Monthly Supporter program - as a way for our community to directly contribute to mymizu’s continuation. Just 500 yen a month (the price of a slightly fancy coffee…!) will contribute to covering essential costs – such as server fees, software licenses, app and database maintenance, and administrative fees - enabling us to focus on growing the plastic-free movement across Japan and the world.
mymizu’s activities are supported by a base of amazing individuals who donate monthly to ensure mymizu’s continued growth and impact! Some have preferred to stay anonymous (and so are not named below), but a HUGE thank you to the 80+ wonderful people who are contributing to support our activities to ensure a more sustainable world for all 💙

mymizu (“mizu” means water in Japanese) is an award-winning initiative to tackle plastic waste run by Social Innovation Japan, a Japan-based registered nonprofit organisation. The freely available mymizu app connects people to 200,000 free water refill stations (water fountains and partner cafes, shops, hotels) globally. Using mymizu, it’s possible to refill your water bottle anywhere – it’s good for the planet, the body and the wallet! We also design creative educational experiences and sustainability leadership training to thousands every year, building a movement where sustainable living is easy and fun 🙌
Together, we’ve made a big impact since 2019. But… our work is far from done.
We’re actually in the business of “systems change”.
We use crowdsourcing, creativity and storytelling to get as many people involved – from schoolchildren participating in our educational activities, to our corporate training programs and global refill platform - we engage a wide range of people in environmental action and design our initiatives to change mindsets, first and foremost.
For many people, the plastic bottle is a first step, or a “hook” to capture people’s attention and imagination. The PET bottle is just the beginning, but an important first step for many on a wider journey towards environmentally conscious living.
Your support will ensure we continue to connect the power of individual action to the wider societal change we so desperately need right now.
Since day one, we’ve been a co-created, community-led movement with a shared mission to change the world, and we’ve proven that with collective impact, change is possible.
If you want to be a part of that change, please consider joining us as a monthly supporter.
100% of your support, no matter how small it seems, will contribute to building an alternative to single-use plastic and help design a more sustainable society.
We hope you’ll join us on our mission. Thank you!
