mymizu, the award-winning initiative to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bottles by connecting people with free water points, now has refill partners – including shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and yoga studios - across all of Japan’s 47 Prefectures.

“In Japan, we are blessed with some of the best drinking water in the world. Yet, the sales of bottled water is increasing every year. We are thrilled to see shops and businesses across the country join us on our mission and help us to achieve this milestone. If you’re interested, our platform is free to join, and is a simple step to contributing towards a society with less waste,” said Mariko McTier, co-founder of mymizu.

From small, family-run businesses to household names such as Audi, IKEA and Hilton Hotel, over 700 businesses have registered nationwide to provide free drinking water through the mymizu platform.

A free and simple way for businesses to engage in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mymizu helps businesses play their part in both combatting plastic waste and preventing dehydration, contributing towards a more sustainable society. This is especially important now, as the consumption of single-use plastic surges, creating adverse impacts on the natural environment and - increasing evidence suggests – human health.

With users in over 40 countries, users of the free smartphone app have tracked the reduction of 80,000+ PET bottles and 25,000+ kgs of CO2 emissions via the ‘refill tracker’ function – simply by refilling their bottles instead of buying PET bottles. Furthermore, the crowdsourced app has amassed 200,000 refill points across the world, becoming one of the largest and fastest-growing databases of drinkable water.
